WSOP-C HARRAHS NOLA:

OPERATION #DefendNOLA

The ring is the thing. As the WSOP-C series at Harrahs NOLA kicked off Scott Adams proved clairvoyant as local grinders did in fact #DefendNOLA.

TALLEY GOES TO 5:

Caufman Talley won 53k and his fifth Gold ring in the three flight re-entry event. He bested 945 other entrants included Pensacola's Simon Philip heads up (2nd 33k) to win one for the thumb.

The Lafayette, grinder and now NOLA resident, defended home turf in his triumph and beat a loaded final 27. Congrats to final tabliests: Danny Doucet for winning 18k in 4th, as well Curtis Terry and Robert Quin of Metairie (8th 6.5k and 9th 5.2k)

Also cashing, Josh Thibodaux (of Thibodaux), Miguel Thompson (Algiers, LA) Jason Schott (Benton, LA), Michael Hebert (Lafayette), Brennan Benglis, Mark Barbay (Baton Rouge), John Lauve (Baton Rouge), Chris Baudean (NOLA), Robbie Matthews (Baton Rouge), Jerry Giroir (Lafayette), Jonathan Wiseby (NOLA), Freddie Ardoin (Lacassne, LA).

Monkey Minions Kenny Milam and Dave Chocheles both cashed. TALK THE TALK, WALK THE WALK:

Scott Adams, not the Dilbert creator, but the creator of the #DefendNOLA hashtag did just that by winning Event 3. The local earned over 22k for first.
Scott Andrews of Dallas finished second for 14k. Mark Pergen of Houston finished third winning just over 10k.

The remainder of the final table included Ben Salpietra (4th, 7.5k Baton Rouge), Austin Peck (5th, 5.5k Allen, TX), Jason Bullock (6th, 4.3k, Baton Rouge), Ryan Pinell (7th 3.3k, Chauvin, LA) Wayne Lovell (8th, Killeen, TX), Mark Holmes (9th, Bush, LA) and the effervescent Rebecca Campbell (10th, Baton Rouge). Also in the money Randy Gordon (Metairie), Steve Bierman (NOLA), Rufus Yates (New Iberia, LA) Jeter Brock and Jaime Ramos (Bridge City, LA).

TERRY TAKES IT:

Event 1 Champ, Curtis Taylor kept the bling in New Orleans as the local player beat a who's who of local grinders to win his first ring. He earned a hair under 20k after eliminating North Carolinian Robert Browning (2nd 12k).
Easton "Baby Faced Assassin" Oremon finished third for 8.8k, along with fellow Harrahs NOLA weekly reg Joey Wideman (4th 6.5k). David Nicholson of Perkinston MS finished 5th, Christian Helmstter of Mandeville 6th, Matt Michel of Gonzales, LA 7th, and Jeter Brock 8th.

Also cashing were a calvacade of Louisiana's finest including: Bill Flippen of Kenner (Brah), Brennan Benglis of Lake Charles, Quang Ha of Gertna, Lila Crochet of Covington, Jeff Bromberger of NOLA, Chris Dupuy of Baton Rouge, Mary Roy of NOLA, Ryan Pinell, Rebecca Campbell, Danny Doucet, Derek Normand of Baton Rouge, and Jonathan Greer of Denham Springs.

COLLETTI COLLECTS SENIORS RING:

The Poplarville, MS elder bested New Orleans Paula Damico, Stephen Schorr, recent ring winner Scott Adams, Lane Leblanc, Charlie Gelvin and a slew of other seniors to take down the title. He won over 11k for first. Congrats also to Holly Meliet, Eddi Pepper, Rene McDaniel and "Spider" Henderson for cashing.

BIERMAN WINS IN ASIA:

Steve Bierman, now has cashed in three continents, with his most recent being an outright win in the Philippines in an APT Championshipship turbo event.  Will he get the elusive Seven Crowns by winning an event on every continent?  So far, exactly zero players have accomplished this.  But, hey the Antartic research station has to have a poker game right?  Why not be the first. Great job Steve!

MONKEY'S MINIONS:

It's become an annual unveiling, and as of this week, the latest and hopefully greatest, crew of Monkey's Minions has been announced.  Ever since Will Souther's WSOP ME run that came to an end with his pocket Kings getting cracked the Poker Monkey has sent a team of worthy players to the Main Event. Will and his team of investors, have been generous enough to announce this year's first three players (all Gulf Coasters): Chris "Loose" Canan, Dave Chocheles (pictured), and  theMega Master himself Kenny Milam.

We here at GCP think highly of all three selections as they all fit the bill as both great players and great guys. Kudos for Will for providing this opportunity to so many (an honor we cherished ourselves in the past).  If you want a piece of the sweat head over to Monkey's blog (look to the right for his column for the link) and get a piece of the action. NOLA POKER TAKES CENTER STAGE!

BOOMTOWN BABY:

If you haven't heard Boomtown New Orleans has added a bounty tournament to their schedule every Saturday night at 7 pm.  For a small $65 buy-in you get a healthy amount of chips and tournametn action, plus win $25 for every player you eliminate. We tried it out for fun Saturday, and guess what, it is A LOT of fun. Cash games were live too.  Great idea by Larry Barret and Bowntown casino.  Chris Canan (see Minions above) might have finished second there this past weekend taking a bad beat on the final hand to lose.  Don't cry for him as first might have been a co-owner of GCP.  What's any of this got to do with a no tanking image?  Nothing, but give us time we'll explain the image soon enough.

WSOP-C THIS WEEK IN NOLA:

Harrahs New Orleans will host the WSOP circuit starting Thursday of this week. The action heats up with a Re-entry event on the weekend and continues through the Main Event next week. Always a fun time and as local player Scott Adams recently remarked, "It's time to defend New Orleans."  #DefendNOLA.  Should see a lot of players up at the top of the pay out charts just in time before the World Series in Vegas starts. Time to start building some bankrolls.

NO TANKING RULE:

The WSOP listened. Sure they thought about it in silence for a long, long, long time, but they have finally acted. Oh no, they just shuffled some chips, no, they are acting. Nope, back into the think tank. Still musing. Oh wait, they finally acted. Anti-tanker rules going into effect this year!

This was overdue.   Just like the guy who tanks for 45 seconds to fold preflop, after a few years deliberation the WSOP finally acted with the right decision. Players such as Daniel Negreanu are already promising to enact the new rule every chance they get. Shore up your decision trees boys, going to have to make your meaningless decisions faster now.  Link for rule change here.
CHEROKEE WSOP CIRCUIT RESULTS:

HORCHOFF 8TH IN MAIN EVENT:

Michael Horchoff won just under 40K finishing in 8th place. A noble effort to finish the high after riding a short stack for most of three tables down to one. Jason Gooch of Vidor, TX won 83k for fifth. Dustin Nelson of Tallahassee won 110k for 4th. Josh Horton of Rainsville, AL won 146k for third.

The big winners: Daniel Pearlman of Hollywood, Fl won just under 200k for second and Vanessa Truong of Raleigh, NC won 318k for first.

ALSO CASHING:

Corey Bierra of Atlanta won 31k for ninth. Toby Boas of Gainesville, FL won 17k for 17th. Jeter Brock of Pelham, AL won 5k for 54th, Leif Force of Tallahasse one pay jump behind in 53rd won 4.7k. Corey Harrison won 3k for 105th.

OTHER WINNERS:

Cody Pack of Cartersville, GA won almost 25k for first in the final event and added a fifth ring to his growing collection.

In event #8, another collector of circuit rings David Aker won 70k and his third gold ring. He finished second behind Ron Germany in event 6 a couple of days before. This time Aker prevailed over a loaded final table that included Maurice Hawkins, Seville Hale and Dustin Nelson. Holly Meliet and John Thibodeaux both of Baton Rouge, LA also cashed in the event, along with former National Champion Jonathn Hilton.

Event #4, saw two gulf coasters make the final table. Austin Reilly of Gulf Shores, AL won 11k for fourth and Josh Lowing of Pensacola earned just under 4k for seventh.
ANTE UP AT PEARL RIVER UPDATE:
Pearl River Spring Poker Classic - Ante Up Poker Tour MAIN EVENT.

Robert Veazy gets the coveted Ante Up magazine cover after a second chop was negotiated heads up with BJ McBrayer.  BJ wins the seat in the Ante Up tour.  The first chop divvied up the prize pool seven ways.  We had a lot of rooting interests as the field narrowed to the money. Great to see so many friends of GCP come out and support this event and get rewarded wtih deep runs.  Congrats to all the winners.

GCP BLOGGERS NEWS, LINKS AND MORE:
LANDRY BASHED HIM FIRST:

Before Doctor Dao made headlines getting his teeth smashed in by United Airways and airport "police," he spent some time playing poker.  In fact, "Digger" as he was known, got beat down in heads up play by gcp blogger Kai Landry in a Tunica main event.  Somehow, as is typical, the poker playing aspect of his past is being used as a negative.  Couple of other people in the news this past week and weirdly no mention of their poker playing in the positive pieces about them.  Who?  Patience please.

MERCIER MASHING:

Jason Mercier won just under 800k taking down the 25.5k WPT No Limit High Roller event at Seminole Hard Rock. It's been a busy twelve months for Mercier. Engaged, married, honeymooned, soon to be dad, and still crushing the live pokers. No surprise he hasn't blogged in a while. He bested "Social Justice" Justin Bonomo in heads up action after Lonnie Harwood went out third. Mercier and his new wife are also embroiled in a Open Faced Chinese poker cheating allegations (they are doing the alledging NOT the cheating) on 2 + 2 .

SERGIO AND WESTBROOK MAKE HISTORY:

Sergio finally got his Major winning the Masters, and Russell Westbrook had one of the best seasons ever as he averaged a triple double.  What's that got to do with a gulf coast poker site?  Both have played with many of our readers. Hank Sitton let us use his picture of Sergio (taken shortly before Sitton took his chips) and described the Spainard as a gentleman on and off the felt.  Russell Westbrook enjoys his poker too, and from everybody that's played with him (which is a lot of you) we hear he's also a gentleman.  Always nice to root for the good guys THAT play poker graciously and support our game.

WEINMAN WINS:

Georgia native Daniel Wienman beat Michael Mizrachi in heads of play of the WPT tournament of champions to win 381k. 2017 has been good to the pro who's successful laddered up from circuit grinding to beating the Grinder heads up a the end of one of the most talent laden fields of the year. Only former WPT winners could play and Weinman won his WPT title in January (800k+). Also, Erik Seidel who tends to go deep against great players also made the final table.

While many players were booking a week at Pearl River, some of ya'll traveled a little further afield. Plenty of accolades to get to. First things first, big congrats to long time friend of the site Teddy Conner on his biggest score...

CONNER BEATS ALMOST 3000 PLAYERS AT SHR:

The Seminole Hard Rock Poker Showdown's Event 9 drew 2,923 entries for their $570 buy-in. The prize pool of just under 1.5 million came down to five players including New Orleans' own Teddy Conner. Teddy unfortunately lost a big flip and went out 5th winning 76k for his effort.  Think his opponent and eventual winner could have easily found a fold.  Oh well.  More big things  to come.

He wasn't the only local with a legitimate shot of winning the 212k for first. Heip Doan's (also of New Orleans) second cash of the series also was at the top winning just under 10k for 14th (more on Hiep Below). Darryll Fish also cashed.

BROCK AND BIERMAN AT IT AGAIN:

"Jeter" Brock didn't wait long to win his second WSOP-C ring. He earned a touch under 15k to go with the victory. The self described erial min casher is risking ruining his reputation and becoming a serial ring winner. We suspect he's fine with that.

Stephen Bierman just amasses big stacks in Circuit Main Events. On the heels of a couple of other deep runs Bierman held the chip lead for a bit in Tulsa's WSOP-C Main. After a couple of bad breaks on day two he still turned his performance into another cash. For a guy not interested in chasing points he seems to be acquiring a lot of them.

HIP TO BE HIEP:



Hiep Doan, former Harrahs NOLA poker dealer, has successfully transformed himself into poker professional. Now he adds Seminole Hard Rock winner to his lengthening resume. He's amassed almost 200k since starting his journey to the other side of the felt. He's cashed in the WSOP Main Event and now has a winner's photo for a tournament that had just under 2000 entries.
Hiep won 27k for first place.

CONGRATS TO FRANCIS NGUYEN TOO!  The Baton Rouge player made a final table in an online event for a nice score.  Well done, sir!
PEARL RIVER IS DAYS AWAY:

Paul, you've been a fixture in poker on the Gulf Coast for a while now. Tell us what you foresee for Pearl River resorts and the role poker may play as that casino grows:

This will be our 5th event at Pearl River Resorts, each event has been larger than the previous one. I believe the continued increase, can be attributed to the value that Pearl River places on its poker players. Where else adds 4 Seats to its Main Event Megas, has table side food service in the tournament area, guarantees the opener, guarantees the main event, and provides unbelievable hotel rates to its poker players? The overall experience is hard to beat in todays poker environment.”

HALL WINS "MIKE AND CATE PLUS HATE" GRUDGE MATCH:

After winning Cate Hall promptly left the casino without tipping the dealers.  Pretty ironic for a social justice warrior to not even think of the dealers.  She has since instructed them to give her $500 appearence fee (yeah?) to the dealers.  Acccording to most accounts (we didn't watch) Dentale ran pretty bad and criticized for playing kind of bad too.  However he was said to have the line of the night when he offered 1k to Hall if she could show him the tax returns for the 500k a year job she supposedly quit. (We heard this second hand so don't quote us on this--maybe it was some one else's one liner after the fact). 

SONNIER SO CLOSE


Derrick Sonnier won 11k finishing eighth in the WSOP-C reentry event in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Sonnier of New Iberia, LA bested over 1800 players to make the final table and get some circuit points. Derrick then jumped into another tournament and finished in the money of that one (19th). Jeter Brock is currently still alive in that tournament with four players to fade.
